Nocturne is a USDA-ARS release, bred from a winter-hardy blueberry hybrid crossed with the rabbiteye variety 'Premier'. It earns its spot in the garden for looks as much as fruit:

- Berries go from red-orange to black as they ripen, so the bush shows both colors at once
- Ripe fruit is sweet and medium-sized, with a flavor unlike typical highbush or rabbiteye berries
- Ripens late midseason into late season
- Upright, slightly spreading habit
- Self-fertile; another blueberry nearby boosts yield and berry size
- Cold-hardy like northern highbush blueberries; nurseries list it for zones 4 to 8

Like all blueberries, it wants acidic, well-drained soil and full sun.
